HIRING - Gameplay Programmer

Villainous Games Studio is looking for a Gameplay Programmer to help the studio ship Harvest Hunt in particular and work on exciting future projects! This role is primarily focused on the gameplay design and development of our games and is a more generalist role.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about this position and will be looking to grow into being an integral part of the team over the course of future projects as well.

  • You must be based in the UK

  • All levels of experience (graduates and juniors are super welcome!)

  • Start date: ASAP

For PAYE, we expect to pay the successful hire around £30,000 - £40,000 pa, depending on experience.

We are wearers of many hats at our small studio and apply a variety of skills within each of our roles. As a Gameplay Programmer at Villainous Games Studio, you will be responsible for:

  • System Design: Develop new systems and features in Unreal Engine 4 according to the design requirements not limited to HUD, AI, physics, etc

  • Iteration: Work closely with design and art to support rapid iteration on existing systems and refine gameplay mechanics, systems, and features

  • Tools: Develop and maintain editor tools that will aid in debugging and creating game content easily

  • Optimisation: Profile and optimize gameplay systems to ensure smooth performance on target platforms, addressing issues like frame rate drops and memory usage

  • Platforms: Work with specific platform and storefront requirements to implement necessary solutions (e.g. Steam, Epic) to support existing automated builds system and launches

  • Maintenance: Overall bug fixing and code refactoring as well as creating documentation outlining technical specifications for gameplay systems, interactions, and mechanics


Knowledge or technical ability required as part of this role:

  • Demonstrable experience of Unreal Engine 4 and Blueprints

  • A degree in Computer Science (or related discipline / equivalent experience)

  • Excellent knowledge of Perforce and Jenkins, or other equivalent tools

  • General knowledge of UE4 Widgets, Materials, Data Tables, Curves & Timelines, Behaviour Trees and experience working on systems such as: Game Flow, Menus, Collision and Physics, NPCs, Animation, Controller support, Menu Settings, Save/Load, Player movement, Camera handling, etc

Soft skills:

Bonus skills or interests that aren't required for the role:

  • Passion for horror games and a general interest in the genre

  • An understanding of the game development process within the scope of an indie studio

  • Familiarity with Steamworks, Clickup, Confluence

  • Familiarity with Agile development processes and task estimation

  • Basic knowledge of ports on PC or console

  • Knowledge of C++ or similar low level programming language

  • Shipped games (indie to AAA)
